A brief report on the COVID-19 Response

Society of the Divine Word, Jharsuguda, is an Organization registered under the Societies Registration Act XX1 of 1860 in the year 1973-74 which is a charitable Society with social, educational and religious in nature. The organization, Society of the Divine Word is at work in three states: Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The organization is engaged in various types of works to create a better society in India. The major area of commitment of Society of the Divine Word is bringing transformation through education, animation and socio-developmental works. This non-profit organization is situated at Cox Colony, Jharsuguda and works for poor and marginalized irrespective of religion, caste, creed or community. During this lockdown period due to COVID – 19, Society of the Divine Word has actively responded to the concerns challenging the public health emergency in India. Society of the Divine Word worked in collaboration with District Administration in Bhubaneswar, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Angul of Odisha State.

Society of the Divine Word made intervention through following activities during the days of COVID – 19, they are, distribution of cooked food, distribution of dry ration, distribution of masks and sanitizers, counseling and awareness programmes, collaboration with local GOs, Community awareness through Digital Media and distribution of homeopathic medicines in collaboration with JDS Homeopathic Hospital and Research Centre. The organization has spent a total of Rs. 21, 31,523.00 as Covid-19 Relief to various people.

The beneficiaries of Society of the Divine Word intervention were slum dwellers, rag pickers, rickshaw pullers, pavement dwellers, transgenders, migrants, domestic workers, rural poor and families in leprosy colonies. COVID – 19 has certainly affected everyone but the worst sufferers are inter-state labour migrants, pavement dwellers, daily wagers, street vendors, rickshaw pullers, rag pickers and marginalized persons of our country. Both the urban poor and rural poor are deeply affected due to lockdown in India. The visible concerns are food, stay, water, medicine, safety and security in the area. Along with the efforts of local and central government, the citizens must take personal and collective care to defeat COVID – 19 pandemic in our country. Society of the Divine Word, Jharsuguda, has helped so many people during the lockdown time in different ways as it is mentioned above.
